The Rouge program of films made by female or female identifying program filmmakers. It was introduced in 2015 to highlight female filmmakers in Australia following the groundbreaking Screen Australia Gender Matters initiative announced in December 2015, to combat the gender imbalances in lead creative roles across the screen sector for women. It has now become an international program.
The SSIFF was the first festival in Australia to have a female filmmakers’ program.
To be eligible for screening in the Rouge, a film needs two females (or female identifying) in the following roles: screenwriter, director, producer.
We offer a $500 prize to the best film overall by a female director.
This program is supported by WIFT (Vic) who are are involved in judging and host a female filmmaker Q and A during the festival.
