We are pleased to announce tickets are now available for the 2017 Setting Sun Short Film Festival. Tickets can be purchased online from the Sun Theatre website or in person at the The Sun Theatre, 8 Ballarat St. Yarraville.

We have a great opening night program in store. We will be showing a selection of films that includes, winners and finalists. We’ve chosen to open the festival with Olympic Nick – A Donutumentary, directed by Ian Tran and Rachel Morssink. We are presenting the winners with their awards on Opening Night. Winners will be on announced on this website at a later date.

Welcome aboard Scotchmans Hill

We thrilled to announce Scotchmans Hill joins us again as our official alcohol supplier. Some of our winners (not the kids!) will receive a bottle of wine. Festival attendees can look forward to a free glass of wine on Opening Night, and The Rouge Program. Thanks to Scotchmans Hill, our judges will each receive a bottle of wine as well.

We’re really excited to welcome on board the Hellenic Republic Hotel in Williamstown. They are offering one lucky winner a $200 dinner for two. How awesome is that? Amazing chef,  Channel Ten Master Chef judge and television personality, cook book author, and proud Hellene George Calombaris is well known to us all. His critically praised restaurants (The Press Club, Gazi, Jimmy Grants and Mastic serve some of the best Greek cuisine we’ve had the good fortune to eat. If only we could enter a film into the festival.



Footscray’s gorgeous Plough Hotel is once again offering a night for two to one of our lucky winners. The Plough is well known in the area for its great food and specialty beers. Read more.



We are proud to be part of this year’s Maribyrnong Council’s Twilight Movies Under The Stars by providing a 10 minute program to screen before each movie. The films were chosen because they were made kids, or highlighted the west. Click here for program details.

The Setting Sun Short Film Festival is a four day festival and competition where we screen great films made by adults and kids.  We screen at the fabulous Sun Theatre Yarraville.

This year promises to be our biggest and best so far. Welcome to Victoria University, who join us this year as our Principal Partner. They are sponsoring the Best Short Film West and  Rising Sun Program (Secondary Schools section) and will award the top ten kid filmmakers a specialised filmic masterclass. 

This year, for the first time, we are screening outdoors. In partnership with the City of Maribyrnong, we are producing a free 30 minute family friendly program to screen before their Twilight Movies in the Park summer series. Check back here for further details later in the year.

The Rouge Program and The Dressmaker Award for Best Film by A Female Filmmaker, sponsored by award winning Film Producer Sue Maslin and author Rosalie Ham returns for its second year. The best film will win $1000, generously donated by Sue and Rosalie. Details.

This year, we’ve changed our format. Films made from 1st December 2014 – January 31st 2017 can enter.  The winners of our competition will receive their awards on Opening Night. We have over $5000 in  prizes to give away.
